A Geospatial AI Plugin for ATAK: Finding the Needle in the Haystack
by Bo Layer, CTO | August 19, 2024

ATAK provides the map, but what if it could also provide the insights? We're exploring the development of a geospatial AI plugin that analyzes terrain, imagery, and SIGINT data in real-time, directly within the TAK ecosystem. Imagine a tool that automatically highlights likely ambush locations, identifies the most concealed ingress/egress routes for a patrol, or flags anomalous activity that could indicate a hidden threat. It's about turning raw data into decision-ready intelligence at the tactical edge, where it matters most.
The ATAK platform has been a game-changer for situational awareness at the tactical edge. It gives our soldiers a digital map, a common operating picture, and a suite of powerful tools for communication and collaboration. But it's still largely a passive tool. It shows you the data, but it doesn't tell you what it means. It's time to change that. We are developing a geospatial AI plugin for ATAK that will turn it from a passive display into an active, intelligent partner. It's about finding the needle in the haystack, and doing it in real-time.
A soldier on patrol is inundated with information. They are trying to navigate, communicate, and watch for threats, all at the same time. They don't have time to be a geospatial analyst. Our plugin will do the analysis for them. It will ingest the terrain data, the satellite imagery, the SIGINT intercepts, and the drone video feeds, and it will use AI to find the patterns that a human would miss.
Imagine a plugin that can automatically analyze the terrain and highlight the most likely ambush locations. Or a plugin that can analyze the road network and identify the safest, most concealed route for a patrol. Or a plugin that can monitor the pattern of life in a village and flag any anomalous activity that could indicate a hidden threat. This is not about replacing the soldier's judgment; it's about augmenting it with the power of AI.
The key to making this work is to present the information in a simple, intuitive way. The soldier doesn't need to see the raw data; they need to see the answer. Our plugin will use simple overlays on the ATAK map to convey the information. A red-shaded area means danger. A green line means a safe route. It's a level of decision-ready intelligence that has never before been available at the tactical edge.
This is the future of ATAAK. It's a future where the map is not just a map, but an intelligent, AI-powered co-pilot that helps our soldiers make smarter, faster decisions in the most demanding environments on Earth.
